Contemporaty IT platforms
IT systems nowadays tend to be independent silos, such as CRM, PLM and ERP.
As these systems send some of their data to other systems, some level integration is involved. This is no longer a problem in practice.
The main challenge is that no single system can provide comprehensive product information and fragments gathered from numerous sources are hard to analyse. This involves a great deal of manual work.
The IT platform of the future
We are now witnessing the advent of new intelligent data storage – data platforms that can accommodate and comprehend almost all forms of data. They are not yet fully automated, but considerable efforts to archive this are ongoing.
This means retaining current IT systems, but with increasing access to data from a common source, as shown in figure 1. The IT platform of the future will send all product or customer related data to the digitalisation platform.

Digitalization platform users (internal or external) may view all available product or customer information according to their privileges. These services will provide increasing degrees of intelligence as a growing number of vendors supply digitalisation platform solutions. Some security and coverage issues will nevertheless limit the global scope of potential vendors.
